April to July 2023 Rotation
Dungeon Crawl Classics
System: Dungeon Crawl Classics
Game Master Graham
Venue: Glanville Hall Wednesday night
Players: Andy D, James W,, Jo F and Neil
Dungeon Crawl Classics is very much it’s own take on adventuring. Utilising a standard D20 system and borrowing from the early D&D ruleset, it forges its own path and rewards player creativity to overcome challenging odds.
Character creation is done in a very unique way through the use of a ‘funnel’ dungeon. Each player receives 4 randomly generated villagers who find themselves caught up in local trouble. They are untrained, and range from street beggar to noble to gong farmer. Many will not survive their first adventure, but those who do will find themselves battle forged and acquiring new skills.
The campaign will be free-flowing from one adventure to the next, although these are not set in stone, and will be chosen to suit the direction things are heading in or the adventuring party we find ourselves with. These range from otherworldly expeditions into the realms of law and chaos, hub town adventures with mysteries to solve, and deep deep dungeons where resource management and mapping will be key.
There will be player death, but not unfairly so. The system challenges players rather than characters to come up with creative solutions, and gaining an advantage and the upper hand in battle is essential if victory is to be assured. If death does occur then a player will not be out of the action for long, there can always be a cell with a prisoner to be freed around every corner!
So, Ye who be not afraid, raise up thine pitch fork, or bee keeping staff, or crutches. Your town has been terrorised for far too long… it is time for action!
City of Nuln
System Warhammer
Game Master Chris
Venue: Glanville Hall Wednesday night
Players: Ahmar A (Em), Freddie M, Joshua G and Will L
Travelling to the City of Nuln a group of adventures form, their desire to make connections, get employment and more importantly, earn some Crowns being all too enticing. Finding a job in the city of opportunity isn't too hard, but the deep swill of the city's heart is as dark and rotten as the dangers it contains. How will you face these dangers and flourish with your lives, body and mind intact?
WFRP 4e uses a D100 system with bonuses for targets, D10s are recommended. The system itself is mid/high-fantasy and far more brutal than D&D. Prepare to lose stats, fingers, limbs, sanity and characters on your adventure. It would be recommended to have a basic understanding of the lore at a high level, there are plenty of resources around for free that can be read in a few minutes
Discworld
System Troika!
Game Master Liam
Venue: Glanville Hall Wednesday night
Players: Dan, David H, Jerrie and Mark C
Troika! in Discworld meets Charles Stross's Laundry via Time Bandits
It's certainly alot more Pratchett than the Gurps rule set of the official rpg setting
Discworld comes from the genius of the English author Terry Pratchett, a flat planet balanced on the backs of four elephants which in turn stand on the back of a giant turtle. Discworld frequently parody or take inspiration from classic works, usually fantasy or science fiction, as well as mythology, folklore and fairy tales, and often use them for satirical parallels with cultural, political and scientific issues.
Masks of Nyarlathotep is a Lovecraftian exercise in horror and mystery. This Call of Cthulhu roleplaying classic is a series of linked adventures forming one long and unforgettable campaign. Horrifying deeds and dangerous sorcery dog those who dare attempt to unravel the fate of the Carlyle Expedition. Set in 1925, adventures begin in New York, then move overseas to England, Egypt, Kenya Colony, Shanghai, and western Australia. Such extended globetrotting requires wit and planning by the players. Their investigators must have steady finances, good language skills, and a willingness to persevere despite governmental interference and cultist harassment. Meanwhile the keeper must bring to life different exotic locales, recreate the sensibilities of other cultures, and balance non-player-character foes and friends to allow each investigator to earn his or her own destiny--ultimate triumph, perhaps, or perhaps madness and agonizing death.
Expedition to Kings Cove
System: D&D 5e
Game Master Andrew W
Venue: Glanville Hall Wednesday night
Players: Helen H, Marco, Richard T and Simon H
5e D&D game for characters starting at level 1.
The notice read “artisans with adventuring experience needed” to travel to new lands, help rebuild a town and explore perilous places.
Upon further enquiry it turns out that a merchant company called the Onyx Enclave have a trade route between the mainland and various settlements on the Kings Cove, a little-known stretch of coastline a very long way away.
Concern has been raised about Larzetown which is one of the settlements. The Onyx Enclave are hiring skilled people like you to travel there and under the instruction of Admiral Pustulus Lork:
Help re-build the town.
Explore the surrounding area to determine whether there are any opportunities that the Onyx Enclave should avail themselves of.
Should the mission be completed and your alive at the end of it then you will be transported back to the mainland. It couldn’t be simpler.
You set sail on “The Singing Siren” for a four-week voyage to Larzetown. Our story begins as Larzetown comes into view and you wonder not for the first time what you have let yourself in for.
Expedition to Kings Cove is a 5e D&D game that I would like to run for one rotation from April. Players will create 1st level characters with bespoke artisan backgrounds. The game will be a mixture of adventuring where characters will explore and gain levels in their class as well as downtime where they will contribute their skills to rebuilding Larzetown.
Coriolis
System: Coriolis
Game Master Andy D
Venue: Glanville Hall Wednesday night
Players: Helen H, Marco, Richard T and Simon H
Coriolis is a Sci-fi game where you play part of a ship’s crew.
What sort of ship depends on what sort of group you are. Are you Free Traders, Mercenaries, Explorers, Agents or Pilgrims.
Which faction are you aligned with or against. Factions include the Consortium, a group of powerful corporations; the Zenithian Hegemony, who are the descendants of the captains family onboard the colony ship the Zenith; the Free League, the union of free traders; the mercenaries of the Legion or Ahlam’s Temple, with its courtesans and philosophers and others.
Your characters and your ship are built in the first session when you decide on your patron. Once that is done you work out who is your Nemesis and why.
For your character profession you can choose things like Agent, Pilot, Soldier, Negotiator or even a fugitive. You can be Human or a Humanitem, a genetically altered human that is looked down on by some people, but perhaps able to breath underwater or work in sub zero temperatures in their shirt sleeves.
Professions are just a starting point for your character as you can then pick up any skills and talents you wish as the game goes on. These can include newly manifested mystical powers like ESP or telekinesis. With enough money your character can get cybernetic implants or bionic sculpts that allow for greater than normal abilities or even extra limbs and wings.
Coriolis uses the Year Zero Engine which mainly uses D6s where a 6 means a success and more sixes means a better success. If you are interested in the game you can pick up a starter set for free from the Free league web store or on DrivethruRPG.
